Speaking and Living Your Mind

This coming Wednesday, April the 9th, three of us are going to be leading a "practice" workshop (really, it's only practice for me, the other two are terrific!) - and it's time for me, the listener, the observer -- to SAY and not to write, what's been on my mind.

This workshop is named after a book I wrote this past January, called "The Inside-Out Speaker." It's message is something I strongly believe in, that we don't have to be, act, live, walk, dress or even speak like anyone else in this WORLD, to connect with our audience. As long as you say it with heart - emotional, authentic, intentional, creative expression, - the "connection" will happen.

And take it all the way - full-on expression and heart - and it's the strongest connection.

So, let me regress a bit here.

Last night, I attended an informal class reunion following my high school's 85th anniversary celebration that day. It was held at a local fun spot, where they served food and drink. I wasn't sure if I wanted to go, but I did. You see, I'm learning to do more of that, to just "go." And, as an avid video pro that's done live series TV, commercials, events and tons more, I thought it would be fun to take my DSLR video and STILL camera. It's an informal way for me to keep getting better at photography, and it's an escape for me, too. It keeps me from pulling back into my naturally introverted mind. The camera's my "fix" - it's my favorite song that makes me stomp down on the gas pedal. So, I went.

Fast forward to today after posting the pictures to social media. A comment came back that read "You are very talented my friend, keep up the great work!"

Yes, I've had and have comments about my work along the same lines, but then I started thinking.

I was battling some things last night. I was a little uncomfortable. For example, I don't love using "flash" accessories. I'd rather use natural light. I love the bokeh look, and I'm not a big fan of going to "auto" either when it's a fast paced gig. Honestly, I was on the fence about if I did the job that I expected myself to do.

I was thinking about --- doubting my abiilities.

After all, I'm a VIDEO professional, a creative services professional (yes, an author too I suppose) - and just an interested photographer hobbyist.

But, you know what?  They looked good to me here on review and the comments were very positive as I said. And it's because I knew that my fallback, my magic bullets were "The Moments." I wanted to capture them more than anything. I always do.

If I keep making that NUMBER 1 - to capture the real fun, the originality of a night, an event, a show - then I'll continue to be good in my creative video work AND when expressing myself to a workshop audience.

In fact, it's important for any type of connection. Cameraman to crowd. Doctor to patient. Teacher to student. Speaker to audience. You have to put the giving and receiving of expressions and the search for moments out in front of everything else. Sure, it's difficult at times for me to express myself in a way that I know, works. But, it's all going to be okay, because it's all coming from the right place.
