Speaking and Living Your Mind

This coming Wednesday, April the 9th, three of us are going to be leading a "practice" workshop (really, it's only practice for me, the other two are terrific!) - and it's time for me, the listener, the observer -- to SAY and not to write, what's been on my mind.

This workshop is named after a book I wrote this past January, called "The Inside-Out Speaker." It's message is something I strongly believe in, that we don't have to be, act, live, walk, dress or even speak like anyone else in this WORLD, to connect with our audience. As long as you say it with heart - emotional, authentic, intentional, creative expression, - the "connection" will happen.

And take it all the way - full-on expression and heart - and it's the strongest connection.

So, let me regress a bit here.

Last night, I attended an informal class reunion following my high school's 85th anniversary celebration that day. It was held at a local fun spot, where they served food and drink. I wasn't sure if I wanted to go, but I did. You see, I'm learning to do more of that, to just "go." And, as an avid video pro that's done live series TV, commercials, events and tons more, I thought it would be fun to take my DSLR video and STILL camera. It's an informal way for me to keep getting better at photography, and it's an escape for me, too. It keeps me from pulling back into my naturally introverted mind. The camera's my "fix" - it's my favorite song that makes me stomp down on the gas pedal. So, I went.

Fast forward to today after posting the pictures to social media. A comment came back that read "You are very talented my friend, keep up the great work!"

Yes, I've had and have comments about my work along the same lines, but then I started thinking.

I was battling some things last night. I was a little uncomfortable. For example, I don't love using "flash" accessories. I'd rather use natural light. I love the bokeh look, and I'm not a big fan of going to "auto" either when it's a fast paced gig. Honestly, I was on the fence about if I did the job that I expected myself to do.

I was thinking about --- doubting my abiilities.

After all, I'm a VIDEO professional, a creative services professional (yes, an author too I suppose) - and just an interested photographer hobbyist.

But, you know what?  They looked good to me here on review and the comments were very positive as I said. And it's because I knew that my fallback, my magic bullets were "The Moments." I wanted to capture them more than anything. I always do.

If I keep making that NUMBER 1 - to capture the real fun, the originality of a night, an event, a show - then I'll continue to be good in my creative video work AND when expressing myself to a workshop audience.

In fact, it's important for any type of connection. Cameraman to crowd. Doctor to patient. Teacher to student. Speaker to audience. You have to put the giving and receiving of expressions and the search for moments out in front of everything else. Sure, it's difficult at times for me to express myself in a way that I know, works. But, it's all going to be okay, because it's all coming from the right place.

Psychological Reciprocity - So true!

Here's a great little read and reinforces what I believe as a presentation connector! How do I know this to be true? I've seen it 'work' for over 30 years now with speakers and others.

The Law of Psychological Reciprocity

Psychological Reciprocity....sounds great! But what on earth does it mean? In a nutshell, anytime you do anyone a courtesy, they are unconsciously psychologically bound to return the courtesy. If I remark that you look nice today, one way or another you will unconsciously find a way to repay the compliment. You’ll often notice people responding to compliments about their appearance by saying things like, “Thank you, so do you.” Psychological Reciprocity at work!

It works in the negative as well. If you say something that someone finds offensive, they’ll unconsciously be compelled to even up the score and they can do that in several ways. They could pay it back in kind, by saying something offensive or insulting back to you or they could tell their friends or colleagues about how awful you are or they could just withhold their business from you. It’s probably best to avoid this minefield altogether by being a bit more sensitive.

Psychological Reciprocity......even though it has a high tech name, it’s not a new idea. The Chinese have believed in Yin and Yang for centuries. Other civilisations have concepts like karma that also bear similarities. Western civilisations may not have particular names for it (apart from the Law of Psychological Reciprocity!) but they’re accustomed to the principle, otherwise no-one would ever say “What goes around, comes around.”

The Law of Psychological Reciprocity;

  1. Pay people genuine compliments. You can always find something genuinely nice to say about anybody if you look hard enough.
  2. Speak warmly towards people and they will reward you with their warmth. Some may take a little longer than others to warm up, but they always get there in the end.
  3. Offer them your undivided time and attention and you’ll obtain theirs.

Go out of your way to do them a favour or service. They will be psychologically bound to repay the favour or service in a positive manner. Even if they don’t buy from you, give them every opportunity to fulfil their end of the reciprocal “contract”....ask them for a referral.

Helping Visually Impaired Children

I recently worked with super educator and author Kristie Smith to begin production on her 4 set DVD series. DVD number one is DONE and we are starting on the second!  Kristie is creating a much needed "First Aid Kit" for visually impaired children.

She needed 300 copies for a conference in mid June, as well as a flyer and bookmarks -- we turned those around in under 3 days for her and she is very happy, as are we.

Kristie is in the beginning stages of growing her company, Abby Diamond Enterprise. Here's the mission statement we developed together.
Abby Diamond Entertainment creates video, audio and print based educational, instructional and inspirational content for the educators, specialists and families of visually impaired children.

Perfect!  So why do I blog about this?  I want folks to know that you can trust Legend to always go the extra mile - we're more than you think a video production and producer services company should be! Strategizing, planning, shaping - producing and posting - duplication.  It's all there.  Years of experience - graphics, directing talent, shooting, editing, and it goes on.

Give us a chance to do some amazing things for YOU!  Thank you.

People that work with children...

What an honor to have a client that works with visually impaired children.

Part of the day was spent with a beautiful person.  She has dedicated her life to her passion, which is working with visually impaired kids. She's a teacher, author and speaker - a good friend to many people.

If there is one thing I have learned the last few years, it's that those are the kinds of people that should be held up and honored for all to see - they are working hard to make others lives worthwhile. Policeman, military personnel, doctors, firefighters - all making real differences along with other very giving people.

Thanks Kristie!
