3 basic, yet overlooked rules of being an effective speaker

Basic?
Yes.

Overlooked?
Oh yeah, you'd be surprised, actually.

Rule Number One:
LOOK at your audience, ALL of them. Not just one side of the room and not just the two people up front. You need to realize every audience member wants to be "picked" - and not the last one chosen to play on your team.

Is there anything more disappointing than looking forward to a presentation, but then leaving, truly believing that the speaker didn't even look your way? I mean, not even a sniff. Body angle, stage positioning - you got nothing. The big zero. And boy, you wanted it, too, because they were good. BUT, you just weren't "picked". You weren't important enough.

FEELS like it, anyway.

And that's really what it's about, right? How they made you feel?

Rule Number Two:
PLEASE take an occasional break, a pause - - something! Your presentation doesn't have to fill every stinking second of every minute. Give me, give US, some drama and some "thinking", yes, some "wonder" time. We're human after all, and we want to believe you are too.

It's tiring enough just to follow a day's speaking schedule, to find the right seat, to take care of our daily business on a new zonal time clock. Your presentation is our chocolate, our "make me feel good" food for the day. I don't want it crammed down my throat in one bite. I want it to taste and FEEL good going down.

Rule Number Three:
Take care of who took care of you.

Thank your audience. Thank your client. Do it at the beginning and at the end. They are your heroes and without them, you wouldn't be there. So, be grateful.

Easy, right?
1) Look at your entire audience - every corner, every side.
2) Take some quick pauses - give your audience some "think" and "wonder" time.
3) Be grateful - thank your audience and thank your client.

The Inside-Out Speaker is a book I've written about some of these same concepts - the keeping it real, keeping it basic, keeping it you. Check it out here.
